CFX_ValidEmail is a high performance CFX tag that runs advanced e-mail validation functions for Cold Fusion. At its peak, it is capable of validating up to 21 million e-mail addresses an hour (Tests run on CFMX/IIS5 Intel P III).

Using a mixture of techniques including regular expressions, MX record lookups on domains and verification using SMTP, CFX_ValidEmail can clean your e-mail address data quickly, efficiently and most importantly, accurately.

CFX_ValidEmail is fully configurable and can be used to perform a simple address format verification using either its internal regular expression or one specified by the user. A more advanced e-mail verification process can be performed by checking to see if there are any mail servers associated with the domain be performing an DNS lookup for any MX records.

For those people that want to be certain that the e-mail addresses they have are correct, the only way to do this is to send an e-mail to the address and see if it bounces. CFX_ValidEmail emulates this behaviour without actually sending an e-mail and although, this technique is not as accurate as sending an e-mail (mails may still bounce even if this check is positive), it does confirm whether the target mail server will accept mail for the address specified at the gateway level.

Utilising a tool like CFX_ValidEmail to clean your e-mail address data can significantly help reduce the numbers of bounced mails you receive by increasing the likelihood of delivery for your e-mails sent to those addresses.
